For this week’s blog post I wanted to introduce you to an amazing ingredient that has SO many skin nourishing properties that I HAD to use it in one of my products. This amazing ingredient is prickly pear oil from the seed of the Prickly Pear Cactus fruit.
The Prickly Pear Cactus, considered a magical plant by the Aztecs, is quickly gaining momentum in the skin care world – and for good reason! This superfood has been used for centuries to treat everything from burns (including sunburns) to illnesses and is great to use on all skin types, particularly mature, dry, and damaged skin
. Although the prickly pear fruits contain about 150-300 seeds each on average, the seeds themselves are tiny and only contain about 5% oil. It takes a whopping 8 TONS of prickly pear fruits to produce just 1 liter of oil! Although the oil is costly, prickly pear is an incredibly sustainable crop. The oil is great for your skin and the fruit and pads of the cactus are edible so not much of the plant goes to waste!
